A Brief History of Santa Clarita

The Santa Clarita Valley distinguised for its beauty began as a tiny hamlet for the Alliklik Indians who occupied the area along the Santa Clarita River where the town of Castaic now stands. In the late 1700's, Gaspar de Portolo claimed the valley for Spain, and colonists from the European continent began to arrive. The area became part of the Mission San Fernando in 1797 and ranchers used the land mostly for grazing cattle. The Santa Clarita Valley later became part of the Mission San Francisco when California was added to the Mexican Republic and the missions were divided into great ranches.

In 1842, the discovery of gold in Placerita Cyn caused our quiet farming valley to become the center of world attention. Miners managed to take several million dollars of gold from Placerita Cyn. and the gold rush began.

In 1848, the United States gained control of the area with the end of the Mexican War and California officially became a state in 1850.

The railroads helped to spur the growth of the area . Henry Mayo Newhall arrived from Massachusetts and sold a right of way and a townsite to the Southern Pacific Railway for one dollar, and the north/south stakes of the tracks were joined with a golden spike in 1876 at Lang Station in nearby Agua Dulce. (For a current look at Santa Clarita trains and bus schedules, visit the Santa Clarita City website here).

The Santa Clarita area's rugged terrain made a perfect setting for early film-makers. Cowboy star William S. Hart purchased the 300 acre Horseshoe Ranch in Newhall in 1919 and filmed several westerns there. The ranch became a county park in 1945 and is open daily to the public.

The modern city of Santa Clarita is one of the fastest growing areas in Los Angeles County. Major freeways, including Interstate 5 and Highway 14, border the community offering easy access to Los Angeles, the Pacific Ocean and the San Fernando Valley.

Only 35 minutes away from downtown Los Angeles, 45 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport and 30 miles from Hollywood and the Burbank airport -- the city offers the best of Los Angeles without enduring the smog and congestion usually associated with a major urban city.

So if you are considering relocating to Los Angeles and are fearful of making that change, put your worries at rest. Our city has been rated the 4th safest city in the entire United States (for populations over 100,000) and yet it manages to retain a small town feel.
